Highlighting that moving to the cloud is still far from straightforward, Royal Mail's head of infrastructure gave his account of their journey.

Speaking on the first day at the Cloud Computing Congress in London, Adrian Steel discussed some of the obstacles they encountered whilst negotiating the migration to Microsoft's BPOS service.

The Royal Mail is currently replacing its old Lotus Notes systems which provide email and collaboration applications to 30,000 users.

Steel found it difficult to implement any customisation of the BPOS service and encountered problems with Microsoft negotiating with Royal Mail's outsourcing partner, CSC. He did stress that there would be similar problems with any cloud provider.

It is inevitable that these issues exist as the cloud service market is still maturing.

Another interesting challenge is the way outsourcers will secure revenues as applications move to the cloud How will cloud computing affect traditional outsourcers?
